Beat the Booze: Two Years Since Launch It's now over two years since the launch of Beat the Booze and, as the authors, we wanted to thank all those who have both bought the book and supported our Beat the Booze campaign, which has to date raised over £12,000. This money, which has included a percentage of royalties from the book, has been distributed to charities working in the field of alcohol abuse and, given the scale of the problem and the limited public resources available to deal with it, it is our aim over the coming months and years to continue to support alcohol charities in any way we can. When we set out on the journey to write Beat the Booze our intention was to write a simple to understand and comprehensive book for people struggling with alcohol addiction and for their families, friends and their employers. Our personal experience is that people find different ways to reach their own turning point and Beat the Booze uses case studies to illustrate a range of these. The devastation that alcohol addiction leaves in its wake is something we are acutely aware of and we appreciate that many of those who have found the answer to their alcohol problem using a particular approach do not wish to contemplate looking at other methods. Nevertheless, just because Beat the Booze does not promote one way over another does not mean that its authors have anything but the utmost respect for any individual or organisation working in the field of alcohol addiction. There are plenty of great organisations, reference materials and alcohol books (including some new titles on the way which we have just become aware of) out there that can provide pointers and help. It is our hope that Beat the Booze continues to be one of the useful information resources widely available to people struggling to cope with their own or someone else's alcohol dependency or addiction. Helen and Edmund Tirbutt Detailed Review
The Medical Council on Alcohol has published a detailed review of Beat the Booze in its journal Alcohol and Alcoholism. Written by Dr Philippa Aveyard, SpR Addiction Psychiatry, Royal Edinburgh Hospital, Edinburgh, UK, the review highlights the fact that Beat the Booze is applicable and informative for those at any stage in the process of addressing their drinking, their carers, families and employers as well as to those with an academic and professional interest in alcohol addiction.
"One of the most constructive, practical books on alcohol I've seen."
— Marilyn Warnick, Books Editor at The Mail on Sunday
"This is a first-class publication that contains a wealth of practical information for patients, families and the general public alike. It is highly commendable."
— Professor Ian Gilmore, President, Royal College of Physicians
"First class, in setting out why we have the problem and also the wider reactions of countries in Europe to our own country's self-induced ills. The book also provides real practical help to those who have succumbed in various ways to heavy drinking. How to beat it personally and the appropriate reactions of family and wider society are all very well set out."
— Professor Roger Williams, CBE, Director of the Institute of Hepatology, International Centre for Research into Liver Disorders
Health Warning: Anyone who drinks heavily and is worried that they are addicted should not stop without getting professional advice first. Stopping without medical help can result in brain damage or even death.
